Cancer is not a new dub for the people breathing in the 21st century. It is as recurrent as our day to day usual activities. Every year about a million of new cases of cancer are diagnosed throughout the world. Most people loose their lives because of cancer. Treatment are available but there is still no 100% surety of recovery from cancer. Cancer influences almost every organ of human body transfiguring it into ruins in later stages.

Truly speaking cancer is not a single disease, but a heterogeneous group of disorders that are characterized by the presence of cells that loose control on normal cell division. Cancer cells divide rapidly and continuously resulting in formation of tumours that eventually strike healthy tissues. These tumourous cells travel across healthy cells creating tumours in them. The most frequent cancers include cancers of breast, lung, prostrate, blood, colon, rectum, pancreas, liver etc.

Formation of Tumour

Basically normal cells grow, divide, mature and die in response to a complex set of internal and external signals. A normal cell receives both stimulatory as well as inhibitory signals which are responsible for its growth, division and maturation. In case of a cancer cell, these signals get disrupted, so the cell divides abnormally at a higher rate. After loosing normal control, the cancer cell loose its normal shape and forms a distinct mass what we call a ‘tumour’. If the cells of a tumour remain localized it is termed a ‘benign tumour’ but if the cells invade other tissues, the tumour is termed as ‘malignant tumour’. Cells that travel to other sites of teh body, they form secondary tumours and have undergone ‘metastasis’.

Cancer- The Genetic Aspect

Cancer is the culmination of abnormal cell growth so needs attention both publically as well as scientifically. A number of theories have been put forward regarding cancer but now researchers realize that most if not all cancers arise from the defects in DNA> Previous views recommend the genetic origin of cancer. Many agents like ionizing radiations, chemicals that we come across result in episode of mutations that cause cancer. Some cancers are often syndicated with chromosomal abnormalities, about 90% of people with chronic myeloid leukemia bear a reciprocal trans location between chromosome 22 and chromosome 9> These observations accord clues for the genetic origin of cancer. In 1971 Alfred Knudson proposed a model for defining the genetic basis of cancer. His model id designated as ‘Knudson multistep model of cancer’, he was studying retinoblastoma- a cancer that develops in only one eye but occasionally appears in both> Knudson’s proposal highlights that cancer is a multistep process requiring several mutations, if one or more mutations are inherited additional mutations are also obligatory to disclose a cancer and the cancer will run in families. His model has been confirmed today.

Cancer starts when a single cell is encountered with mutation and results in its abnormal growth. This cell divides and forms a clone of cells each carrying same mutation. An additional mutation that occurs in any of the clone cells may further enhance adroitness of these cells to burgeon and cells with both mutations become dominant. In this process, depicted as clonal evolution, the tumour cells gain more mutations that allow them to become increasingly aggressive in their proliferate aspects. The rate of clonal evolution depends upon the frequency of occurrence of new mutations. The genes that regulate DNA repair have also been found to get mutated in progressive cancer stages and inherited disorders of DNA repair are usually depicted by intensified incidences of cancer. Normally DNA repair mechanisms eliminate many of the mutations but cells with defective DNA repair systems are more likely to remain mutated including the genes that regulate cell division. Many cells are aneuploid and hence accelerate cancer progression.

Are Environmental Factors Also Responsible For Cancer?

Smoking is a good paradigm of environmental factor confronted with cancer strongly. Other environmental factors incorporate certain types of chemicals such as benzene (industrial solvent), benzo [a] pyrene (cigarette smoke), polychlorinated biphenyls (transformers and capacitors). Ultraviolet light, ionizing radiations, viruses are other carcinogens associated with cancer. Most environmental factors cause somatic mutations that quicken cell division.

Genes Contributing Cancer

The signals that regulate cell division fall under two categories: molecules that speed up cell division and others that inhibit it. Because cell division is perturbed by these two factors, cancer can arise from mutations in any of these two factors. Mutations in stimulatory genes are usually dominant and are termed ‘oncogenes’. Oncogenes were first identified cancer causing genes discovered by Peyton Rous in 1909. Michael Bishop, Harold Varmus and their colleagues in 1975 discovered that genomes of all normal cells carry DNA sequences that are closely related to viral oncogenes. These cellular genes are termed as protoncogenes. THey are blameworthy for basic cellular functions of normal cells but when mutated they become oncogenes and produce cancer. Many oncogenes have been pinpointed by experiments in which selectted fragments of DNA are added to cells in a culture.

Tumour suppressor genes are more difficultly discerned than oncogenes as they inhibit cancer and are reccessive in action. One of the first tumour suppressor gene to be spotted out was that of retinoblastoma in 1985 by Raymond White and Webster Cavenne.

Alteration In Stucture And Number Of Chromosome Also Cause Cancer

Most tumours possess mutations. It is now clear that mutations in chromosomes appear to be both cause and be a result of cancer. At least three kinds of chromosome rearrangements- deletions, inversions and trans locations may be associated with cancer. Deletions may result in loss of one or more tumour suppressor genes. Inversions and trans locations may result in disruption of functions tumour suppressor genes and generation of fused proteins that may stimulate symptoms of cancer. Fusion proteins are generally formed in myelogenous leukemia, a form of leukemia affecting bone marrow cells. A third process by which cancer may arise due to chromosomal rearrangement is by the transfer of a potential cancer causing gene to a new location where it is activated by regulatory sequences, Burkitt lymphoma is common example.

Viruses Also Cause Cancer

About 95% of the women with cervical cancer are infected with human papiloma viruses (HPVs). Similarly, infection with the virus that causes hepatitis B increases the risk of liver cancer. Epstein-Barr virus causes mononucleosis embracing Burkitt’s lymphoma. There are only few retroviruses that cause cancer in humans. Other human cancers are associated with DNA viruses which like retroviruses integrate into the host chromosome but disparate retroviruses donot reverse transcription.

Changes In DNA Methylation Are Often Associated With Cancer

In many cancerous cells the ornamentation of DNA methylation are found to be altered. In some cases, the DNA of cancer cells is over methylated (hypermethylated) or undermethylated (hypomethylated). Hypermethylation is seen to contribute to cancer by silencing the expression of tumour suppressor genes. However, hypomethylation also contributes to cancer requires further research. The role of DNA methylation is interesting because unlike other genetic changes DNA methylation is reversible. These types of reversible genetic alterations are called epigenetic processes.

The treatment of cancer is accessible at present inclusive of chemotherapy, bone marrow transplantation, radiotherapy etc. but the question to be 100% free from cancer still preponderates.

Usually, psychological and medicinal treatments for alcohol rehabilitation are preferred. The alcohol abuse can result in wide spreading social, economical, physical, and mental damage. The main aim for alcohol rehabilitation is to help the patients lead a happy and drug free life. It comprises mainly of two phases of dependency that are physical and psychological.

The important part of alcohol rehabilitation is the psychological treatment, which focuses mainly on the assistance to the patients thus making them able to cope with the conditions of stress and anxiety. The psychological treatments are aimed to bring positive attitudinal changes to retain a healthy lifestyle.

The psychological treatment plays a vital role in compelling the patient to go through medical treatment. The alcohol rehabilitation becomes easier if the patient is made to confront the denial for abstaining from alcohol. It will be a challenge for the patient. If the challenge is successfully accomplished, it will result in continued abstinence from alcohol.

Alcohol addiction should be taken in account while going through psychological treatment. Mostly, alcoholics are of the view that they drink due to a number of emotional problems. They should be made to account for the fact that alcohol is the main cause of emotional problems. Hence, they should abstain from it, if they want to get rid of their emotional and social problems. The psychiatrist must ensure the involvement of addict’s family and friends in order to help him/her recover from addiction. Family and friends can work along with the doctors for better results.

Medical treatment of alcohol consists of withdrawal from alcohol at the initial stage. It also comprises medication for treating nutritional deficiencies, detoxification and also to encourage alcohol abstinence. The use of disaffirm is prescribed as it is an Anti abuse thus, prevents alcoholic from drinking. This medicine is used during the detoxification phase. It requires abstinence from alcohol as in take of small amount of alcohol can result in vomiting and nausea.

Naltrexone is also recommended during the medicinal treatment of alcoholics. It helps in controlling the temptations for alcohol. It also helps in overcoming the psychological addictions. Moreover, if the patient does not abstain from alcohol then this medicine can cause complete annihilation of the neurological chemical addiction.

Chlordiazepoxide is prescribed to the alcoholics to guarantee the withdrawal of alcohol. Moreover, multivitamins are also used for this purpose. For those who consume alcohol in greater quantity, multivitamins are given in combination with thiamine and folic acid. These prevent the sudden effects of alcohol withdrawal.

Benzodiazepines are used as anti anxiety drugs in order to treat the anxiety and delirium from which the patient usually suffers while going through the rehabilitation process. Recommended dose of the medicine should be used, as it may prove to be addictive.

Exercise should be encouraged during the course of alcohol rehabilitation that helps reduce craving for alcohol. It is a good way to relieve stress and as a result, patient will get a substitute of alcohol in the form of exercise.

Diabetes is a metabolic problem.

The explanation is this, it is an action of converting food that we eat and changing that into energy. It also relates to the storage and distribution of that energy throughout the body. How well this storage and distribution system works with your body determines how well your body works. If all is not working correctly, often the energy is stored as fat in the wrong places.

We can blame our genes, we can blame our mothers, we can blame our spouse, we can blame our kids to no avail, and we must accept responsibility for our diabetes.

Some experts’ say this metabolic disorder is inherited, but is fatness inherited; We know it is caused by what we eat. Some experts say it can be hard to diagnose by doctors, obesity, high blood pressure cholesterol or diabetes, I can’t help but wonder what the doctor is doing or thinking, maybe getting paid, after all he doesn’t want to lose a paying customer.

Those same experts say that once the doctor has it figured out he/she might suggest a self care program through a life style change. Now that is a great idea.

What really is happening is that the insulin made in the pancreas in unable to do its job with the food that has been ingested therefore the food becomes insulin resistant and when that happens you blood sugar levels rise. When you have very high blood sugar level you can go into a coma and you can go to sleep for ever. RIP.

Let’s investigate the terrible foursome:

Obesity: We know what causes obesity, we can see that we weigh more than the people around us and that firstly has to be a signal. We do compare ourselves in every way with our fellow man. Even the guys when they go into the urinal they check out the other guys and compare. A well dressed man or woman always stands out in the crowd and you must compare your size and looks to them. It is even better if you have a beautiful face without acne pits all over it.

To judge if we are medically within our limits we can look to the BMI or Body Mass Index. There are a number of web sites that can help you figure that out but a body mass index between 18.5 and 24.9 is considered normal. One such site is operated by the US Department of Health & Human Services. There are others but this does have a body mass index program to see how fat you really are.

Cause of obesity is usually eating too much of the wrong foods

High Blood Pressure: The normal blood pressure for most people is referred to as 120 over 80 written 120/80. Anything over 139/89 is considered pre hypertension/high blood pressure and anything over 140/90 is considered high blood pressure.

Cause of high blood pressure is usually eating too of the wrong foods. Stress just aggravates it.

Cholesterol: Now, what is cholesterol, really? It is made in our liver in adequate supplies to produce sex hormones and assist in the digestive process. Cholesterol is made up of good and bad things called Triglycerides some good, some bad. When we have too much of the bad stuff it makes our blood thicker and it sticks to the arteries and veins of our body. Our poor heart has trouble pumping that thick stuff around the body and it is unable to push the blood into certain areas.

Cause of high blood pressure is usually eating too much of the wrong foods.

Diabetes: Now with all these problems combined, comes diabetes. The food we eat in not able to accept the insulin our insulin made by the pancreas allowing the sugar levels to rise to a dangerous level.

Cause of Diabetes is usually eating too much of the wrong foods.

Do you want to solve the problem…….EASY……? Stop eating all the crap that you have been shoveling in your mouth and make a lifestyle change

Come and read the secret………. No more things that contain sugar, no more refined carbohydrates, limit your meat intake to 10% very lean. Eat anything that is grown in the ground.

SIMPLE.

Oh and prepare for a new wardrobe because you will need one, you can buy that with the savings in your medication.

YOU CAN DO IT.

Travelers often get stiff neck muscles. Travel itself compromises your posture and muscle alignment. After traveling, a weary passenger arrives at their destination but they aren’t ready to have their vacation, their important business conference, or to enjoy the family retreat. They’re distracted with a stiff, painful neck.

So, we think the pain will subside in a day or two. Or we seek some aid for pain relief. But here are some common forms of aid that can actually worsen your cervical problems, and what you should do instead.

Big relief goofs.
1) Applying a heat pack. Sure, it feels good while the heat is on the affected muscles. That’s because our senses like to perceive heat, so they block out pain signals temporarily. But the last thing a strained, inflamed neck needs is more heat and activity.

Instead: Cool it! Apply ice, or another cold compress, to agitated muscles.
Travelers’ trick: For a cold compress that fits your body’s contours, soak a wash cloth and stick it in the freezer overnight, or leave it outside to freeze.

2) Getting a good night’s sleep on a big, overstuffed hotel pillow. You think some rest will help? Not on a giant pillow that pushes your head forward, further adding to your problem!
Instead: Roll up a blanket, soft towel, or clothing to roll under your neck.

Travelers’ trick: Ask the hotel staff for a down pillow. Many lodges stock them now.

3) Take a few painkillers. Your neck muscles might benefit from some anti-inflammatory pills, but watch what you take. Many OTC painkillers, especially when combined with recent altitude changes, can cause nausea, diarrhea, and other gastric upset. Plus, some painkillers rely on caffeine as an active ingredient: so then, you’ll be in pain and won’t be able to sleep. Don’t ask for more problems.

Instead: Avoid caffeine that can inhibit your rest and recovery. Only take ibuprofen (anti-inflammatories), and only take with food.

Travelers’ trick: Carry a few herbal alternatives in your luggage, like arnica or turmeric.

4) Stretch out the stiffness. Ouch! If you looked out the plane window, or worse, dozed off with your head tipped to one side, then you might have strained your neck. Those neck muscles, tendons and ligaments might be really flared-up and tender. Stretching it might aggravate the problem.

Instead: Wait until the inflammation settles down. Then, choose gentle treatments.

Travelers’ trick: Get a massage. Have a massage appointment set up for the late-afternoon of arrival, or the morning after you arrive. But advise your therapist to avoid deep tissue on the neck. Your neck just needs soothing, gentle touch this time.

It’s easy to strain the neck when you travel, and equally easy to keep it in pain if you don’t know the right relief treatments.

The Human immunodeficiency Virus or HIV as it is popularly known, is the virus
that causes AIDS (Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome). HIV causes a person’s
immune system to weaken dramatically. The immune system is the body’s
defense mechanism against all forms of infection and undesirable intrusions.
When HIV attacks the body’s immune system, the body becomes more prone
to infection. These infections are oftentimes called “opportunistic”
infections since the take the “opportunity” of infecting the body at its
weak state. Once infection has taken place, illnesses can occur. Some
of these illnesses can be arrested by a healthy immune system. However, a
considerably weakened immune system will not be able to fight the infection.

Having HIV does not mean that one has AIDS. The HIV weakens the immune system
but AIDS sets in when infections have already take place. AIDS thus
consists of the weakened immune system and the infections that have affected
the body to a great extent.

Individuals who are affected with HIV may not know it. The virus can remain
dormant for weeks, months or even years. Once the virus multiplies, the body
may not even detect it. It may take time for the body’s immune system
to respond to the virus. HIV can progress to AIDS when: an HIV-infected
individual’s CD4 T cell count drops below 200 cells/mm; an HIV-infected
individual develops an illness that is very unusual in someone who is not
HIV-positive .

The HIV cannot reproduce outside a living host, nor can it survive well in
the environment. HIV cannot be transmitted with handshakes, breaths, or
sharing clothes. There is no evidence that insects can be carriers or
transmitters of HIV.

HIV is transmitted via blood transfusion. There are many ways wherein blood
may be transfused from one individual to another. One example is blood
donation. The other common example is through sexual intercourse, especially
when there are open wounds within the genitals or genital area.

An individual can lessen the chances of acquiring HIV by being careful in
matters that relate to the occasions when blood can be transferred from
one individual to the other.

At present, researchers are still very active in researching on the cures or
alleviations for HIV. Since HIV attacks the immune system, it is important to
take vitamins and minerals that strengthen the immune system. These vitamins
include vitamin A, the B-complex vitamins, and vitamin C. University studies have found that colloidal silver can kill the HIV virus in a petry dish but don’t know if it will work in humans

Vitamin E is an antioxidant that contributes to the health of the immune system.
Zinc increases the reproduction of infection-fighting T-cells. Selenium
increases the production of natural killer cells and mobilizes cells to fight
complications that may be arise from HIV.

1. What’ll we do with a drunken sailor (x3)
Earl-aye in the morning?
Chorus:
Way hay and up she rises (x3)
Earl-aye in the morning
2. (Chorus)
4. Shave his belly with a rusty razor (x3)
Earl-aye in the morning? (Chorus)
5. That’s what we do with a drunken sailor (x3)
Earl-aye in the morning? (Chorus)

During the Vietnam War this could have been my theme song. The ship would sail for three months at a time up-and-down the coast of Vietnam, then go to a port for rest and relaxation, which meant pulling the plug and letting the crew loose.

Now, 40 years later, it’s all a haze and I’m just happy to have lived through it. I hear the old English sea shanty and the words resonate with me. There are so many other verses in this traditional sea going song, some more colorful than others.

Alcohol at sea is nothing new, as U.S. warships in the 1700′s and 1800′s routinely carried large quantities of rum. That is no longer the case, but alcohol abuse remains a concern.

Focusing our attention on the U.S. Army for a moment, a while back I was ready a story by Gregg Zoroya in USA Today about the Army and how the rate of soldiers enrolling in alcohol treatment programs has doubled since 2003. Of course there is a correlation between the rise in alcohol abuse and the Iraq and Afghanistan conflicts.

According to the article, the reports from counselors diagnosing alcoholism or alcohol abuse, such as binge drinking, has risen from 6.1 per 1000 soldiers in 2003, to about 11.4 per 1000 soldiers in early 2009. The article also stated that there was an increase of 12% in Marines who tested positive between 2005-2008 for drug and alcohol abuse.

That is an alarming statistic, and U.S. military leaders are not unaware of the situation. Admiral Michael Mullen, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, told USA Today, “I’m sure there are many factors for the rising numbers…but I can’t believe the stress our people are under after eight years of combat isn’t taking a toll.”

Alcohol abuse is a major method of dealing with stress for millions of people, who are just trying to deal with everyday life. Add to that the pressure of combat, being away from family for long deployments, the riggers of military life in a war zone and it’s understandable that the military has a serious issue to deal with. They know that alcohol is easily abused and can be the solution for many men and women. Moreover, the military also understands that they must reduce the strain, by reducing the number of deployed troops.

The article stated that the military issued a directive to commanders “urging” them to have soldiers who test positive placed into treatment programs. The directive also said that, if necessary, some soldiers might need to be punished under Army regulations. The problem is, soldiers who failed the test may slip through the cracks and receive to treatment. If their disease has progressed, they may just be discharged and given no opportunity to be a part of a therapeutic community and move into recovery. That is an unfortunate reality. Even with the increased awareness of the military leadership over alcohol-related issues, enrollment in treatment programs between 2003 and the present have only risen by half a percent.

The article also pointed out that personnel may not be allowed to go into treatment because of the need to keep the numbers up for combat deployments. Meanwhile, the numbers of related health issues, most notably suicides, has reached record numbers. Call it an inconvenient truth, but the U.S. military has work to do in taking care of its own. Just like the civilian world, it is much easier to ignore the problem, or punish those with the disease, than it is to really make an effort to bring people into treatment and help them regain their lives.

Give the military credit for being aware of the growing problem and give them encouragement to follow up on plans to treat personnel for the disease, with the goal of retaining them as members of the armed forces. But if the whole plan is an empty promise, then about the only thing you can do with a drunken sailor is to “put ‘im in the long boat til he’s sober.”

Chemotherapy treatment is used to treat cancer and chemotherapy drug prevents growth of cancer cells. These drugs are also used to treat non-cancerous conditions with lower doses. This treatment is generally used after surgery which helps to avoid reappearance of cancer.

Though it is true that chemotherapy is superior treatment, it also produces some side effects like nausea, hair loss, omitting, weight loss, mouth sores, menopause etc. These side effects are temporary but sometimes may change to permanent. Side effects can be cured by using other medicines along with chemotherapy drugs and these may end as the treatment ends.

Live, grow and die in predictable way is the normal process of cell growth. When cell divides and start forming more new cells without stopping the process, cancer occurs. Chemotherapy protocols involve the cells, which destroy the cancerous cells by avoiding them from multiplying and thus it can control the cancer growth.

Chemotherapy may affect the healthy cells, which cause to lower count in blood cells. Chemotherapy protocols struggle to maximize the removal of cancer cells and minimize the negative effects on the normal and healthy cells.

Now days many developments are done for providing the chemotherapy protocols in a successful way. These developed chemotherapy protocols helps to identify exact type of cancer, the patient is suffering from. Still it is needed to work for getting better chemotherapy treatment.

The pediatric oncology group (POG) is national oncology group, which develop specific protocols. Protocols are very useful to select appropriate drugs, routes, doses and also help to choose the order of chemotherapy medications. Protocols provide information about estimation and other clinical involvements.

All this information is useful while going through the chemotherapy administration. The protocols can be used with reference to clinical personal caring for patient. The standardized approach of protocols are helpful to remove many errors that may be dangerous with chemotherapy.
